How to Design Your Living Room
When it comes to designing your living room, it isn't exactly a sound science, nor do people really know what to do. But this is important. This is the room where you're going to be in probably everyday. This is where you're going to relax after a day at work and this is where friends are going to be when they come over. There has to be a specific atmosphere that the room creates that you want to feel. I think the most important question that you want to ask yourself is what is the central purpose of the room? I think a lot of people miss that point and since they miss it the room doesn't really flow properly. When you answer that question, don't come up with an answer that you think someone would be expected to answer. There is no need to come up with answers that aren't true. If your plan is to watch television most of the time, than your purpose is watching TV. There's no need to be embarrassed by that fact. Whatever you choose to be the central purpose of the room, should have everything oriented around that theme. For example, if you plan on using the room to talk to friends and family, than you have to orient the furniture in such a way that it allows you to and have a full on conversation. Conversely, if you plan on watching television, than all the furniture would point toward the television. When it comes to the actual furniture you take, I always suggest people go with things that are relaxing. This is your place to relax, so you need furniture that can create that feeling. I can't really tell you what will work for you, but try it out and imagine sitting in that chair doing your central purpose. That will give you the answer. When it comes to the floors, I'm a big fan of hardwood. I know a lot of people like carpet in this room, but I think hardwood is much better for cleaning purposes and I think it creates a much more open feeling in the room. In the end, it is your choice in what you want on the floor. Carpet is enjoyed by a lot of people since it is nice on the feet. |
